What Is

Yellow Fever

Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection found in parts of Africa and South America. There is no cure for yellow fever, but a vaccine is available to protect against it.

Most people who contract yellow fever do not experience any symptoms. Those who do may experience mild symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, and vomiting. A small percentage of people develop a severe form of yellow fever, which can include high fever, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), bleeding, shock, and organ failure.

Yellow fever is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite an infected person or monkey. The virus cannot spread from person to person directly.

The best way to prevent yellow fever is to get vaccinated. The yellow fever vaccine is safe and effective and provides long-term protection. Other preventive measures include using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and avoiding areas where mosquitoes are active.
